Ah leaks and rumours, our only kryptonite. While fans have taken to dressing up in their own spandex and punching each other in the face of their own accord due to a lack of news on Injustice 3, a Darkseid-sized leak has potentially lifted the lid on what NetherRealm Studios has planned next.
The premise is simple. Take the runaway success of NetherRealm's Mortal Kombat series and give it a DC comics spin. It worked for Marvel v Capcom. First released in 2013, Injustice: Gods and Monsters grew even bigger with the release of Injustice 2 in 2017. An animated movie is our later this year, so it's surely just a matter of time before a third game is announced?
What's the Injustice 3 leak?
The scoop comes courtesy of Reddit and originally popped up on 4Chan before being archived (cue suspicious face). If correct, the leak claims there will be a base roster of 29 characters. In typically MK style, more will be added via DLCs, with Injustice 3 tipped to have four character packs post-release.
Apparently, the squad will also include "several characters" that borrow from "previous Netherrealm Studios game in terms of gameplay". It continues, "For instance; Red Tornado will borrow from MK11's Fujin, Metallo will borrow from MK11's Terminator and Constantine will borrow from MK11's Shang Tsung."
The fighter packs are the big pull. Apparently, each will include three characters and a premier skin for a pre-existing brawler. Doing the maths, that means there should be 41 fighters in total. If you want to know who could be stepping into the ring, here we go:
Base Roster:
- Aquaman/Ocean Master
- Batman/Terry McGinnis
- Beast Boy
- Black Canary
- Blue Beetle/Green Beetle
- Booster Gold
- Cheshire
- Constantine
- Cyborg
- Deathstroke
- Flash / Impulse
- Green Arrow
- Green Lantern/John Stewart/Guy Gardner
- Harley Quinn
- Joker
- King Shark
- Lex Luthor
- Metallo
- Mirror Master
- Nekron
- Poison Ivy
- Ra's al Ghul
- Raven
- Red Tornado
- Robin/Nightwing
- Supergirl
- Superman
- Wonder Woman/Artemis
- (Pre-Order) Anti-Monitor
DLC Characters:
- Etrigan
- Livewire
- Johnny Cage
- Killer Croc (Premier Skin for King Shark)
- He-Man, Neo
- Fire God Liu Kang will be the final 3 guest characters
When could we know more about Injustice 3?
It's definitely an impressive lineup if true. Notably, we're excited about the prospect of welcoming Batman Beyond's Terry McGinnis to the fold, as well as He-Man (motherf'in He-Man?), and MK favourite Johnny Cage. To be honest, you'd have us sold on those three alone.
If you weren't already taking all of the above with a healthy pinch of salt, remember that NetherRealm hasn't even made the game official yet. That massive Nvidia leak claimed Injustice 3 is on the way, however, Nvidia did its best to distance itself from the "leaked" titles inside - well, you would, wouldn't you?
The above leak claims that this year's Game Awards is one to watch. With a return to normal, this year's event will take place on December 9 and herald a much-needed in-person showcase. We need to also remember that NetherRealm's next project has heavily been rumoured to be Mortal Kombat 12. In an ideal world, the studio would be working on both at once, but as we all know, Ed Boon is a very busy man!
