Gamers have had some choice words for PlayStation in the wake of announcing its huge PlayStation Plus overhaul. Some are confused, others are frustrated, and a select few are actually pretty excited - but all-in-all, it's a baffling series of changes that have overcomplicated the service.
Players are looking at bagging themselves a wealth of free games akin to the Xbox Game Pass model, and classics are returning. This includes some from the PS3 arriving via the cloud, as PlayStation has long had trouble simply porting games over from the console. Although the games are on their way, don't expect PS3 DLC support to be part of the new PS Plus
Will PlayStation Plus Premium Have PS3 DLC Support?
It has been revealed (via VGC) that any games coming to the Premium tier of PlayStation Plus won't have any PS3 DLC support. This means a lot of games could end up being practically incomplete by the time they land on the service. We hoped that PlayStation would be able to implement some kind of PS3 DLC support, but it doesn't look like it's going to be happening.
PlayStation 4 games are a little luckier, as while they can be streamed, they can also be downloaded. The last generation of titles has the necessary support from sony, but that's not much condolence to those who will be missing whole chunks of their retro favourites.
It's a frustrating revelation, especially as players have been fighting for PS3 games to become backwards compatible for some time. Unfortunately, it's a casualty of the streaming structure at a time Sony is boasting the PS Plus Premium will be an all-singing, all-dancing, way into the future.
What Games Will Suffer From The Missing PS3 DLC Support?
Among the games set to suffer from this lack of support are Asura's Wrath, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, Crash Commando, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Lost Planet 2, MotorStorm Apocalypse and MotorStorm RC, Resistance 3, and Tokyo Jungle. This isn't just one or two releases, and it's likely to put a dent in those willing to play them if we're just confined to the base game.
A big casualty is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, which will miss out on its four DLCS. In particular, The Revelations DLC let you play as Alucard. It's a shame that these games will simply stand unfinished, especially after so long of being unplayable on modern PlayStation hardware. It's bleak, but we're just going to have to take what we can get and pay through the nose to do it. Well, never look a gift horse in the mouth, and least some of a PS3 game is better than none of it.
