Generally speaking, PlayStation has been falling behind in the backwards compatibility market. It's not quite Nintendo bad - not offering Switch access to legacy titles without a remaster or the fee payments that come with Nintendo Switch Online.

It's definitely not as good as Xbox, whose backwards compatibility is a phenomenal testament to the quality of the console's classic games. Fans have wanted more for some time, as PlayStation has cult classics and hidden gems that are more than deserving of attention, and a way to play them beyond having to pick up an old console in order to do so.

It's one of the areas in which PlayStation could always do better - but as it turns out, the company could be making some bold steps very soon indeed.

PS3 Games Appear On The PS5's Store

In what could be a sign of something massive to come, some games from the PS3 have finally appeared on the PS5's online store. Various players have reported seeing the likes of Bejeweled, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones on the store, all with the "PS3" tag, implying that PlayStation is working on bringing more classic games through into the new-gen console's library.

Plus, others have discovered that Dead or Alive 5 - a PS3 game previously only available through PlayStation Now - currently displays a price instead of a prompt to join the service. It implies it can now be bought as easily as any other game.

PS5 Lists Patent For Backwards Compatibility

Not only are games beginning to crop up, but a renewed patent has stoked rumours that a big push of classic games coming to the PS5 could be on the horizon.

The patent registered by PS5 and PS4 Architect Mark Cerny is designed to allow for backwards compatibility, using a "spoof clock and fine grain frequency control". We won't pretend to understand the technician jargon, but it looks like new backwards compatibility means could be on their way.

This is a great step up for PlayStation, especially given its silence on the method of playing older games so far. This is a positive sign, and if it means more PS3 games are yet to come to the new-gen console, then we can't wait to dive back into the classics.
