Let's be honest, we all knew the PS5 Pro was coming, it was just a matter of when. Like when Sony gave us a mid-generation refresh with the PS4 Pro, we always expected the Blue Team would have one more evolution waiting in the lab before we get to the PlayStation 6.
Sony's September 10 Technical Presentation finally unveiled the PS5 Pro to the world, boasting improved ray tracing, a GPU upgrade, and AI-driven upscaling. You also get some go-faster stripes, oh, and a pretty price tag to go with it. Now that the PS5 Pro is out there in the wild, it's breaking the internet with hilarity.
The internet reacts to the PS5 Pro
We always knew the PS5 Pro would likely up its price tag, but were you really expecting to pay $700/£700 for a mid-gen refresh? As you can imagine, Sony's controversial pricing structure has become a sticking point. Considering the original version came out for $500 in 2020, it's quite the jump.
While the console wars have split us into Blue and Green camps as Sony and Microsoft continue to butt heads, the PS5 Pro has brought us together through memes. Both sides are laughing at the reveal, with some questioning how Sony can justify the price tag.
Still, it's wild to think that Sony didn't even show us any new games, even showing off The Last of Us Part 2 (a PS4 game) to try and showcase its credentials. Let's also remember that the base version is disc-free, meaning you'll have to shell out an extra $80 for that - as well as $30 for a stand.
Microsoft isn't without its critics, with many pointing out that there's no real Xbox refresh on the horizon. Instead, you've got the 2 TB Galaxy Black Special Edition, which costs $100 less than the PS5 Pro but pretty much just sticks some glitter in the paint.
Others have crunched the numbers and reiterated you could build a decent PC rig for less than the PS5 Pro or splash out on the Steam Deck OLED to enjoy far more games than the Sony library of exclusives. As we've seen Sony slowly move toward more PC releases, a lot of its first-party games are available to more fans.
It remains to be seen how the PS5 Pro sells, but with the PS5 flying off shelves and only recently managing to sort out its supply issues, we imagine there will be plenty of consoles being sold in November. With the PS5 Pro out in time for the holiday season and looking like the way to play modern games, it'll likely be a Christmas cracker.
