Everyone has a favourite Pokemon game. It's like everyone has a favourite starter Pokemon (it's Squirtle, btw). However, when it boils down to the facts and the numbers, there is one clear winner. Now, this might not be what you want to read. But there's some good news.
A Reddit user by the name of u/RoboDataOfficial shared an animated chart, that shows how each of the games performed from 1997 to 2022. The numbers changing over the years are almost hypnotic, but the one champion that cannot be toppled (yet), is Pokemon Red/Green/Blue. For those of you unaware, in Japan it was known as Green instead of Blue.
Fun fact: the reason for this was apparently because Game Freak was hoping that by using the colours of the US flag, it could appeal to a North American audience. Well, it turns out it needn't have bothered. Or, to be fair, it potentially worked like a charm. To this day, it's still the most popular Pokemon game ever released.
What Are The Most Popular Pokemon Games?
In order of sales over the last 25 years, the most popular Pokemon games are:
- Pokemon Red/Green/Blue - 31m
- Pokemon Gold & Silver - 23.7m
- Pokemon Sword & Shield - 23.5m
- Pokemon Diamond & Pearl - 17.6m
- Pokemon X&Y - 16.5m
- Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire - 16.2m
- Pokemon Sun & Moon - 16.1m
- Pokemon Black & White - 15.6m
- Pokemon Yellow - 14.6m
- Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire - 14.3m
What Are People Saying About The Most Popular Pokemon Games?
As you can probably imagine, the comment section was pretty split regarding the results. Although it seems that a lot of players were just happy that their favourite game (that might not have done so well commercially) still got a look in on the graph, even if it was just for a second.
One person said: "Blue Rescue Team is my favorite game of all time and I'm happy that it was on the board for a second". Another added: "My boy Pokémon pinball had a lil cameo". Either way, it was always going to be a difficult task to take on the behemoth that is Pokemon Red/Blue.
