Phew, that's a sigh of relief. Apparently, Rockstar Games' Red Dead Redemption remake will be a full-blown remake instead of slapping a coat of paint on the 2010 game like the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Given that the GTA Trilogy was panned, this can only be for the best.
Taking a leaf out of Capcom's book with the Resident Evil 4 remake or Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part I, it sounds like Rockstar will be saddling up for a proper new-gen revamp of the cowboy caper. As we've had a recent run of successful remakes, here's hoping a Red Dead Redemption remake can do the same.
Sounds like Red Dead Redemption is getting a remake
The clue was in the name, but as confusion around remakes and remasters continues, players have been rightly concerned we'll get another subpar release like the GTA Trilogy. A Reddit thread titled "Red dead Redemption will be a remake not a remaster according to previous leaks" might have the scoop.
Supposedly containing information from "legitimate leakers" who have a good track record with GTA games, a now-deleted tweet claimed the Red Dead Redemption remake is being made in the same game engine as 2018's Red Dead Redemption 2.
Backing up these claims, the OG source comes from 2021, which is even before the remake was teased via the massive NVIDIA leak. Then again, with it being two years old, we'd take it with a generous pinch of salt. It's been shown time and again that 'leakers' will just throw out any old information when looking for clout.
When Could the Red Dead Redemption remake release?
Some of us had given up on our hopes of a Red Dead Redemption remaster, with rumours suggesting it was canned following the disappointment of the GTA Trilogy. Things kicked up a notch when a Korean rating board seemingly spoiled the surprise ahead of Rockstar making an announcement.
A bunch of wagging tongues are all well and good, but you'll likely want to know when we'll be able to play this mythical Red Dead Redemption remaster. As Rockstar hasn't officially announced it yet, you might think you'll be waiting a while before drawing your pistols.
According to Gaming Route, former IGN editor Colin Moriarty claims the Red Dead Redemption remake could release as early as August 2023. As we're currently in July, that would put it just a matter of weeks away. Importantly, it could mean we're playing RDR before we're playing Bethesda's Starfield.
At this point, we'd be surprised if Rockstar isn't working on a Red Dead Redemption remaster, but what it looks like remains to be seen. Also, while we're more than happy to see John Marston getting a new-gen revamp, it's just another step further away from GTA 6.
