Star Wars Outlaws Sales Are Bad News For Ubisoft

There have been some great Star Wars games over the years, and while we'll always look back fondly on the likes of Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic and the OG Battlefront II, it's baffling to think that the idea of a fully open-world Star Wars title was saved until 2024. Sadly, that honour falls to Star Wars Outlaws

Massive Entertainment had the seemingly impossible task of trying to wrangle the ever-grouchy Star Wars fandom, hoping to put a sci-fi spin on the classic Assassin's Creed formula Ubisoft is known for. Outlaws was already facing a frosty reception due to its use of a female lead, and post-release, other issues suggest that you haven't been flocking to buy it.

Star Wars Outlaws sales have gamers worried about the future

Although Ubisoft is yet to reveal the actual sales figures for Outlaws, Insider Gaming suggests it only sold one million copies in its first month. The site explains that while it hasn't been given official numbers, "sources close to the game" claim that it has "just ticked over one million sales worldwide."

This is a pretty low figure for a AAA release on an IP as big as Star Wars, leading the site to add, "It’s not as many sales as Ubisoft expected, which explains the recent comments about the game’s performance proving ‘softer than expected’." Considering Helldivers 2 sold 12 million copies in 12 weeks (averaging a million a week), Outlaws is trailing far behind.

As you can imagine, the usual "Go woke, go broke" crowd are blaming the use of Kay Vess (who was previously branded 'ugly') as the cause, but as our own review highlighted, there are a myriad of issues with Outlaws that see it fall short of something like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Replying to the news on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit, gamers were obviously concerned. One mused, "Seems like the general consensus is that they need to sell around 5.5 million units to break even, with budget estimated to be $250-300 Million."

Another added, "Jesus Christ the future of video games is looking a bit bleak," while another concluded, "I wouldn’t say bleak for the whole industry, but for AAA gaming this is a serious issue. We as gamers want bigger games that push the envelope for what games can be. But not every game can do that, nor should every game attempt to do that. It’s a double-edged sword."

It's clear something isn't quite clicking with Outlaws, and Ubisoft itself has acknowledged that things haven't gone as smoothly as a freshly-shaved Wookiee. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot also sparked outrage thanks to a recent investor call where a comment about "gamers expecting extraordinary experiences" led to headlines about him 'blaming' the fans.

Considering earlier reports claimed that Outlaws had sold around 800,000 copies by the end of August, it seems that sales have slowed considerably since then. Still, with an upcoming Steam release and the game's first DLC due on November 21, Star Wars Outlaws is making a big push as we head into the festive season.
