It doesn't matter how many times it will get confirmed or unconfirmed, the discussion around Call of Duty's console allegiance is likely to rage for years.

It's a fair debate to latch onto - one of the very best selling franchises in the gaming world is now in the hands of one console developer. Beyond its standing legal obligations to allow the franchise to stretch its legs on PlayStation, Xbox could very easily take the series for itself.

Xbox has suggested it doesn't want to hurt PlayStation in the process, and has attempted to quell nerves in fans - but it looks like retailers are telling a different story.

Retailers Are Warning About Call Of Duty Exclusivity

It looks as though retailers are protecting themselves from the angry mums of the future's disappointed young gamers, as some signs have started appearing in shops, suggesting that players should be wise about their choice of consoles.

Twitter user HazzadorGamin has reported that retailers are doing some preemptive damage control, by suggesting users should be thinking carefully about which console they should be getting.

"Notice to gamers", a sign in the window of a console display cabinet in an unnamed store reads. "Microsoft has bought Activision! Choose your machine carefully", with "Call of Duty" written underneath in parentheses.

It's interesting to see how retailers have interpreted the purchase, and it looks as though those in the industry getting games to fans are predicting a dramatic loss for PlayStation.

Will Call Of Duty Be Xbox Exclusive?

Retailers Are Warning Us That Call Of Duty Could Be An Xbox Exclusive

Xbox seems to be playing ball with PlayStation when it comes to the corralling of Call of Duty, but the moment the current contract for the games comes to an end with the release of Call of Duty 2023, the ball is in Microsoft's court. It might be seen as a bit cheap and cruel, but from that point, if Xbox wants Call of Duty for itself, it can go ahead with total exclusivity.

The actual gatekeeping of the popular franchise remains to be seen, but that certainly won't stop fans from being nervous. The thought of an Xbox-exclusive CoDverse is a tempting prospect that would earn Microsoft a small fortune. Maybe the retailers warning consumers might be onto something after all.
