When it comes to horror franchises, few have stood the test of time quite like Resident Evil. Capcom's shuffling shooter refuses to stay down after taking a bullet to the head, but who's complaining? Following the back-to-basics approach of 2017's RE7, we've since had sequels and remakes to keep fandom fed.
Away from keeping our fingers crossed that the eventual RE9 will be another certified banger akin to RE7 and Village, there are equally high hopes that more remakes will be on the way to satisfy our hunger for the Resiverse. Capcom could soon be running out of games, but thankfully, there are still plenty of remakes at the rumour mill.
Rumoured Resident Evil Zero and Code: Veronica remakes might not be what we hoped
Resident Evil Zero & Code Veronica Remake Will Reportedly Not Be As “Ambitious” As RE4 Remake

As pointed out by Twisted Voxel (and shared on the r/horrorgaming subreddit), noted Resident Evil insider Dusk Golem claimed that rumoured remakes of 2000's Resident Evil – Code: Veronica and 2002's Resident Evil Zero won't be on the same grand scale as recent remakes.
The OG game was remade as the beloved REmake in 2002 and then given an HD remaster in 2015, but it wouldn't be until 2019 that RE2 got the remake treatment. This was quickly followed by the RE3 remake in 2020, but the pandemic meant we had to wait a little longer for 2023's Resident Evil 4 remake.
Even more than its predecessors, the RE4 remake boldly reinvented the source material and was wildly praised for improving what many consider one of the best video games of all time. Dusk Golem says that Zero and Code: Veronica remakes won't be as "ambitious" as RE4, adding that while it's the "crown jewel" of remakes, it was challenging in terms of scope and expectation.
The account reiterates that Zero and Code: Veronica remakes are the only ones in active development (alongside RE9), which would nix everyone's expectation that a Resident Evil 5 remake was coming next. The revamped RE4 ending neatly cued a RE5 remake, but to be honest, we're glad the older games could be getting some love.
At this point in the confusing chronology, we were especially worried that Code: Veronica would be skipped. Although the Dreamcast game is something of a black sheep of the Resiverse, it's important to the franchise's lore, especially in setting up Albert Wesker as the big bad of RE5.
Claire Redfield actor Stephanie Panisello is more than up for a remake, telling TheGamer, "I know that's a game that could probably use that extra TLC," so it's not just fans calling for more. Zero takes place first chronologically, and while we could take it or leave it, it would at least set the stage for a new-gen version of 1996's original Resident Evil...again.
Whatever Capcom has up its sleeve, we'll take all the Resident Evil games we can as long as they aren't Re:Verse. With RE9 presumably being a dot on the horizon, the developer can continue making bank by having us shell out of revamped remakes - even if they aren't as ambitious as RE4.
