It sometimes feels like Capcom hates Dino Crisis. While we know that isn't true, the fact we haven't had a new game since 2003, there's not even so much as a whiff of a remake, and the developer released the dino-centric Exoprimal (even featuring a red-headed heroine), you'll forgive us for thinking it.

For those hoping that Capcom is holding back a surprise Dino Crisis revival, our dreams have just been stomped by a Titanosaur. While it's easy to see the similarities between Dino Crisis and Resident Evil, it's apparently its similarities to another Capcom favourite that's stopping Dino Crisis 4 or a remake from hatching.

Shinji Mikami blames Monster Hunter for Dino Crisis going extinct

Even though it's true that Capcom's Monster Hunter series has some dinosaur-esque creatures in its realm, it's a very different tale - after all, it's not called Dinosaur Hunter. Sadly, Capcom legend Shinji Mikami has thrown water on our hopes of seeing another Dino Crisis while Monster Hunter is around.

Speaking to Eurogamer at Gamescom, Mikami at least acknowledged Dino Crisis' existence, but maybe not how we'd hoped. When responding to disappointment that Dino Crisis remains dormant, Mikami said, "I'm very surprised to hear that, the awesomeness of dinosaurs and the stuff you can do with dinosaurs, that's been kind of really nailed down by Monster Hunter in recent years."

Confirming our biggest fears, Mikami added, "So even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version of Dino Crisis, I don't really feel like there's a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just since Monster Hunter has become such a big game. But yeah, it is surprising."

As for the complaints that Exoprimal was a poor man's Dino Crisis, he defended the idea and concluded, "The concept is pretty different from that of Dino Crisis. I guess the fans got their expectations up, but here we are." It's true that one's a survival horror and the other a PvPvE shooter, but still, it feels like a wasted opportunity.

We've been hearing about mythical new-gen Dino Crisis remakes for years, and only this year, Capcom celebrated the game's 25-year anniversary...by announcing a new Resident Evil. While we'll take all the Resident Evil and Monster Hunter games we can, Dino Crisis feel like it's crying out for a modern outing.

With Monster Hunter Wilds on the way in 2025 and looking like it could be one of the year's biggest games, we don't see the MonHun series bowing out anytime soon. As Konami has seemingly forgotten Castlevania and Activision has abandoned Crash Bandicoot, Dino Crisis seems destined to be resigned to the history books.
