As one of the most flamboyant players in Call of Duty history, Anthony "Shotzzy" Cuevas Castro does attract his fair share of critics. The 2020 World Champion's tenure at OpTic Texas has not been quite as successful as he and the Green Wall would have liked.
Despite maintaining their status as one of the best teams and orgs in the CDL, only one trophy in two years has allowed for a lot of doubt to begin creeping in as to whether Shotzzy's credentials alone are enough to keep faith in the roster.
But after the criticism reached a new level prior to Major II, Shotzzy has now come out and set league-wide records in a stellar weekend, including one massive win against Major-winners Toronto Ultra.
Shotzzy breaks records with CDL 2024 Major II qualifier wins
In the series against Toronto Ultra, Shotzzy set two league-wide records, asserting his dominance over the best roster in the game, currently.
The SMG star, who also fluctuates to an MCW every now and again, went on a destructive 13-kill-streak in the Control match against Ultra, which set the record for the longest streak this year and neared the top of the charts for the entire five-year CDL table (record sits at 16 with Chris "Simp" Lehr).
The kill streak saw him stay alive for the entire first round, collecting an 11-0 start and adding a further two as they flipped over to the offensive side. Shotzzy's streak also contributed to a whopping 3.25 K/D ratio, which is the highest in a respawn game mode throughout the season.
The OpTic roster could have also won a "15-0 Neslo series", a term that was crowned for winning matches two, three, and five in a series (avoiding Hardpoint), but after winning the Search and Destroy 6-0, Control 3-0, Toronto did get one round of Search (Map 5) on the scoreboard to prevent a complete whitewash.
Shotzzy hits back at 'superstar' rebuttals
Shotzzy's critics have been gathering pace as of late, with Toronto's smack-talking Thomas "Scrappy" Ernst being vocal about his "going for clips" play style and The Flank Co-Host Patrick "Aches" Price claiming that he no longer holds the OpTic player in "superstar" status.
Since Aches' comments, though, Shotzzy has now broken two records and maintained a K/D ratio above 1.5 in matches against Boston Breach and Ultra, securing them the second seed for the Major, only behind New York Subliners on the technicality of map-win percentage.
Speaking on-stream, Shotzzy hit back at Aches, saying, "This whole thing with me not being a 'superstar', I couldn't give two f**ks what they talk about, I know what I'm capable of and they don't affect me."
