The future of The Sims is here, and while we know a traditional The Sims 5 isn't on the way, fans have finally had a peek behind the curtain at Project Rene. First unveiled at October 2022's "Behind The Sims Summit", Project Rene is dubbed as the next evolution of the Sims Universe.
While The Sims 4 is sticking around for a little longer as Electronic Arts continues to milk it for every penny, Project Rene's multiplayer potential has players excited for what's to come. There have been several closed playtests, but as leaks make their way online, it seems you're less than impressed.

Although unverified, it looks like a series of Project Rene leaks have appeared on The Sims Reddit. Showing off the Sim creator, you can write a bio for your virtual friend, dress them in a variety of wardrobe choices, and send them to work in a Parisian neighbourhood.
It definitely looks more expansive with a vibrant neighbourhood, however, it looks like monetisation will be a big part of the game. There's interestingly a nod toward Project Rene being a mobile game, stating, "The features in this app do not necessarily represent the direction of content of any upcoming Sims game."
There were already worries that Maxis would try to juggle a game that works on both PC and mobile, with the former likely being dragged down by the latter. This wasn't the only problem, with the OP slamming the "hideous" graphics and 'Pixar' look of these Sims.
One disgruntled gamer wrote, "Looks like microtransaction central, with a side of subscription-based weekly outfits, probably battlepass-esque items." Another said, "When I saw the coins next to the outfits I gave up on any hope of this being good 🙄," and a third concluded, "People always joked that EA would get to this one day but now it’s potentially happening. Sad what might be the future of sims."
Even though it's high time that The Sims evolved, a microtransaction-packed future is one that's sure to rattle fans. Being free-to-play is one thing, but if that comes with having to shell out real-world money just to change your t-shirt, you can bet players will have something to say about it.
Notably, there are numerous complaints that Project Rene doesn't look like a new-gen continuation of The Sims. It's important to remember that even if these leaks are legitimate, they come from an early build of the game. The jury's out on whether Project Rene can bring The Sims back in a big way, but for now, we're keeping an open mind.
