Throughout the Skyrim main quest, Dragonborn's studies of the Thu'um get a good helping hand from both the Greybeards and also some random courier who delivers us letters about where we can find words of power to develop our shouts.

But, who in Oblivion sent us the damn letter? We never find out and it remains Skyrim's biggest secret. Well, despite being over a decade down the line, players have just been given a massive clue as to who wrote the letter, and it could have The Elder Scrolls 6 implications.

Skyrim's 'Letter to a Friend' mystery might have just been cracked

Over the years, players have theorised that the likes of the Ebony Warrior could be behind the letters or Delphine who uses "a friend" as a letter sign-off elsewhere. Some more fun fan theories include the Courier himself, who appears to have traversed the entire of Tamriel or a time-travelling Dragonborn helping themselves.

But this latest clue looks to rule out any mortal being, as one player has received a letter that refers to actions in the Soul Cairn. The Soul Cairn is a place only for souls and undead, which means no living soul in Tamriel - aside from Serena - knows that we've been there.

This leaves undead characters as the letter sender. Hermaeus Mora, a Deadric god such as Hircine, or even Talos remain as the only remaining options. Out of the three, Mora would be the less appropriate but equally as believable given its typical mockery.

A god would make more sense, as the divine often intervenes and plays a long role in many quests, so why not the entire game and series? Hircine or Talos, there does still remain a question of uncertainty, but now we're so much closer to the answer than ever before. Talos, by the way, was Dragonborn too.

Others also revealed that the letter sender will also claim that Dragonborn has been "In The Mind of a Madman" when shouting in the Pelagius Wing of the Blue Palace, which further backs up this deity theory.

Skyrim's Letter to a Friend mystery could tee up Elder Scrolls VI

What's curious is that this omnipresent character is that they have never been revealed at all, not even eluded to. It has always remained a mystery for all players, with only these types of clues to go off.

It could be just a troll from the devs who want to keep you guessing forever - which seems to be the time frame for TES6... The Elder Scrolls 6 is hopefully closer than we think, so we might get an answer quite soon.
