Given that the weapon XP grind has been left behind and pure enjoyment has come to the surface again, the tables have turned for Call of Duty multiplayer - all as the fascination for small maps quickly fades.

For the last few weeks, players have consistently moaned about having the choice between Rust, Toonoxide (Nighttime Rust), Shipmas, and other recycled small maps, with the larger MW2 remakes being ignored and removed.

In true Sledgehammer Games style, the studio has had one ear to the floor and addressed its glaring map issues by announcing a wider pool for standard playlists.

Sledgehammer Games cuts back on repetitive small maps in MW3

As of August 13, Modern Warfare 3's map pool has been rebalanced, as Sledgehammer Games has reduced the frequency that the "small maps" will appear in Quick Play playlists such as Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, and Domination.

This will see the likes of Shipment get left behind and will hopefully champion the older MW2 remakes again, which have seemingly been forgotten about until now. Maybe we will see Underpass and Wasteland return to public lobbies.

Specifically, Rust will be a target of these changes, as Sledgehammer Games' social account tweeted a simple thumbs up to one fan who asked it to "lower the chance of Rust appearing a lot too".

Not to fear, small map lovers

If you're in the camp of remaining enjoyers of the hell-for-leather maps, there is no reason to fear, though, as the Small Map Moshpit will be becoming a permanent mainstay in Modern Warfare 3.

This also comes with tweaks to the frequency of different maps, with the developers insisting that map variants will become sparse. With the team at Sledgehammer promising it's listening, it should give the likes of Stash House and Meat more time in the limelight.
