In a move that seems puzzlingly ignorant to the largely negative feelings toward the release of Modern Warfare 3, Sledgehammer Games has praised the "great" response to the game.
Responses to MW3 'thrills' Sledgehammer Games
Xbox Wire has released a new blog post penned by Activision Editorial Manager David Hodgson, talking about the launch of Modern Warfare 3 and Sledgehammer's response to the game.
The post kicks off, stating that the team is "thrilled to see that [the launch] has come with a great sentiment from the Call of Duty community." Later in the post, it also quotes the Design Director at Sledgehammer, who said, "we're incredibly inspired from the reactions so far."
While there have been some positive responses to aspects of the game, such as the multiplayer, many players and fans are disappointed with the release of Modern Warfare 3, making Activision and Sledgehammer's response feel disconnected from reality for some.
Why are fans reacting negatively to MW3?
For example, on Metacritic, MW3 currently has a rating of 56 - the lowest in the series - while on Steam, the community response has seen the game sit at a Mostly Negative score of 27%.
CoD games often receive backlash from the community for one reason or another, but this time around, it's more consistently negative than ever. Many claim MW3 feels more like an overpriced DLC than a fully-fledged AAA game due to it being reportedly rushed through the door.
Some of the biggest criticism has been levied at the extremely short campaign and the poor mission design, which has seen the more linear and empowering set pieces of older games ditched in favour of semi-open world missions with generic objectives to tick off.
Along with this are the unnecessary changes to Zombies, which has seen it lose the round-based format and go open world.
Like our Modern Warfare 3 review points out, the only saving grace this time around has been the multiplayer, which has been well-received, and even with the negative reception and lower sales, MW3 has broken engagement records set by the previous entry.
It's easy to see why Sledgehammer would still be thrilled overall, as despite the negative reception to the game, it will still make far more money than you could count in a lifetime.
