Someone Finally Made A Portable GameCube

After years of rumours about a portable GameCube, one modder has taken matters into their own hands and built a fully-functioning one you can take on the move.

We all love a bit of retro gaming, and although the GameCube isn't exactly up there with the N64 in terms of Nintendo love, we've seen the '00s console make something of a comeback in recent years. In an era when gamers are modding old consoles, like replacing Joy-Cons with a modded GameCube controller, someone has gone and outdone everyone else.

These days, Nintendo is known for the portability of the Nintendo Switch - that hindered the likes of the GameCube and the Wii. Back in the development of the GameCube, early blueprints confirm there could've been an attached screen, which also explains why it randomly has that handle for portability. After years of speculation, someone has gone and done it themselves.

What Is The Portable GameCube?

As you know, Nintendo has been a little slow on the uptake when it comes to adding previous console libraries to the Switch. For the time being, we're limited to the likes of Super Mario Sunshine and Resident Evil 4 in terms of GameCube titles on the Switch, meaning firm favourites like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker are locked to the GameCube or its Wii U Port.

Over on Twitter, GingerOfOz said they were sick of seeing a fake picture of a portable GameCube that has been doing the rounds for around 15 years. Apparently, they tracked down the person who made the fake image all those years ago, who admitted they did it "just for fun." But GingerOfOz wasn't dissuaded and, determined to make it a reality, the noted modder decided he would have to go on and do it himself.

In their impressive video, GingerOfOz explains that they actually used Wii hardware because it was backwards compatible with the GameCube and the Wii motherboard uses a lot less power than its bigger brother. It was made using 3D printing and boasts a 480p screen alongside headphone support.

Can You Play The Portable GameCube?

Much like the world's smallest N64 being a one-off, we doubt GingerOfOz is going to start shipping these out on Etsy. Like so many of these builds, these fan projects exist just to prove it can be done. Even if they were going to start selling, the portable GameCube won't be able to rival your Switch in terms of portability. Its battery life is a measly hour before you'll need to charge.

Hardware shortages are a continuing problem with older consoles, so there are sure to be those who are outraged GingerOfOz has Frankensteined a GameCube. Still, the ability to effectively turn your GameCube into a Nintendo DS is a great one. Until Nintendo eventually decides to go down the N64 route of adding GameCube games to the Switch Online library, you'll have to dust off that purple box if you want to play like we did back in the day.
