The blue blur is ready to make his comeback in 2024, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 set to race to the top of the box office once again. Jeff Fowler is back for his third Sonic outing, and with even more star power on the books thanks to Keanu Reeves' Shadow the Hedgehog, there's plenty of hype for the threequel.
Ben Schwartz first lent his vocals to the titular hedgehog in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, and with the OG breaking records, it looked like the infamous video game movie curse had been trounced. 2022's Sonic the Hedgehog 2 managed to top its box office, but will it be third time lucky?
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has apparently leaked online
According to reports on X (formerly Twitter), an unfinished version of Sonic 3 is currently doing the rounds. For those who are old enough, you might remember when 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine leaked online without its finished CGI. It might've not been the final movie, but it was pretty close to how it looked in cinemas.
The baffling part is that we haven't even had a Sonic 3 trailer yet. Even though we know one was shown to fans at CinemaCon, it's been months and we haven't seen one yet. Considering Sonic 3 is out on December 20 as a Christmas treat, we'd expected to see it by now.
Imagine a world where we get the entire Sonic 3 before we get a trailer. Despite these leaks not being verified, you can bet that there are plenty of fans who will be trying to find them to potentially save the price of admission to the cinema.
For once, the sympathy seemed to be on Paramount's side, with Sonic supporters saying it would be a shame for the movie to be leaked. "It's definitely scary and sad to see happen if it does. Many people who worked on the movie will see their work get leaked before it gets to the big screen which will suck," said one fan.
Another added, "People are getting way too mad about the trailer not dropping and rightfully so but this is on a whole nother level," and a third concluded, "The artists behind the film don’t deserve this 👎👎." Obviously, movies often get leaked early or appear online, and with Origins: Wolverine still making $373 million against $150 million, it still made a hefty sum.
Paramount has had something of a bad run recently, with 2025's SpongeBob spin-off Plankton movie also leaking early. Netflix was also struck by an Arcane Season 2 leak, so it's not a great time for video game adaptation. If anything, this hopefully spurs Paramount to release the Sonic 3 trailer.
