Although Sony promised the 'majority' of PlayStation 4 games would work on the PS5, the gaming giant has revealed which titles haven't made the cut.

When it comes to modern gaming, few consoles have had as much of a seamless transition as the PlayStation 4 into the PlayStation 5. Ignoring the whole debacle of Cyberpunk 2077 looking like it was being played on the OG PlayStation if you tried to run it on PS4, most games have looked almost as great on the current-gen system.

As Sony ushers in a new era of gaming, it's keen not to leave the PS4 in the dust. With 116.4 million units sold - making it the fourth best-selling console of all time - it's no surprise the PS4 isn't being chucked on the scrapheap yet. Part of this partnership means the "majority" of the PS4's 4,000+ games are forward compatible with the PS5. Now, Sony has revealed which games haven't made the grade.

Which PS4 games won't play on PS5?

A Sony support page previously listed 10 games that were incompatible with the PS4. In a welcome twist, this has now been stripped back to just seven - meaning Sony presumably found a way to get three of them running on the next-gen console.

Notably, most of the below include VR content. Thankfully, there aren't any major AAA titles. There are several Assassin's Creed games that use VR. Reports claim that while they can boot up on PS5, they encounter a barrage of bugs, which would explain why they've been pulled.

One name has stuck out more than others though, until earlier this year, Joe's Diner was on the list. The underrated 2015 game tasks you with playing a waiter who has to keep order in a diner that's been built on an Indian burial ground. Think Poltergeist meets Mystic Pizza.

If you want to know which PS4 games you can't play on PS5, here's the full list:

  • Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma Volume One
  • TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2
  • Just Deal With It!
  • Robinson: The Journey
  • We Sing
  • Hitman Go: Definitive Edition
  • Shadwen

The following Ubisoft games were on the list, but with the developer removing them from its site, we'll add them below as an extra:

  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China
  • Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia
  • Risk
  • Star Trek Bridge Crew
  • Werewolves Within

Which PS5 games won't play on PS4?

On the other end of the spectrum, there's a growing number of PS5 games that are next-gen only. One of the biggest to start the trend was Demon's Souls. This was then followed by the likes of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, and Returnal. Most recently, DEATHLOOP was released as a PS5 exclusive.

Sony has scaled back its plans for future PS5-only releases, so rest assured that Horizon Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok will release on both systems. Then again, as developers continue to wind down their multi-console releases, the PS4 is coming toward the end of its life cycle. Put it this way, we're not convinced the mythical Grand Theft Auto 6 will make the cut for PS4.

For the time being, it's a perfect partnership between the PS4 and PS5. If you were one of the lucky few to get your hands on the next-gen console, or whether you're happy playing on the PS4, these two powerhouses are working together in harmony....for now.
