Sorry, Sonic Won't Be Kissing Humans Anymore

It looks like Sonic the Hedgehog's days of kissing humans could be over, as SEGA confirms the company mascot will no longer be smooching his human counterparts.

For some reason, Sonic has been the victim of a lot of franchise experimentation that has led to some immensely bizarre titles. Not only have we seen a werewolf Sonic in Sonic Unleased, but we've seen him wield a sword in Sonic and the Black Knight or adventure with a past version of himself in Sonic Generations.

Still, few outings have been as out-there as 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog. The game was panned, but the strangest part of it was Sonic's human love interest called Princess Elise - who closed the game out by planting a smooch on our favourite hedgehog. It was weird. Thankfully, though, it looks like we're done with that.

Well, thank goodness. The human-smooching hedgehog might have to keep it in his pants from here on out, as he isn't likely to be allowed to kiss actual people anymore. Drat, how will SEGA come up with another storyline?

When asked about Sonic's past with kissing actual people, that for some reason, exist in the same world as giant anthropomorphic hedgehogs, the head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka isn't particularly excited to get Sonic back on the people-dating scene.

"I don't think we'll be doing that again," he said to Axios (via IGN). Succinct. At least even those at the top recognise that it's weird for the Blue Blur to go around kissing humans - especially when he's got Amy Rose right there. Not only is it a little off, but it also makes him a cheat. Imagine if Mario suddenly ditched Peach and started kissing Goombette

What's Next For Sonic?

Now that seeking out humans to kiss like a freakish hedgehog-shaped heat-seeking missile is down with, Sonic's next outing will be in Sonic Frontiers, a game that has seen a huge amount of gameplay footage revealed recently. Fans aren't particularly convinced, as the game seems to be adopting the Breath of the Wild approach to an open-world, but without any of the charm or colour.

Even if critics aren't sold on the idea of Sonic Frontiers, we won't really know what lies in store for us until we can actually play the game. Thankfully we can rest assured that if there are any humanoid characters, Sonic won't be lacing up his trainers and dashing to find like a weird Bee Movie offshoot. Thank goodness.
