Saving the world can be a sometimes lonely affair, and we've got bad news because it's going to stay that way for Marvel's Spider-Man 2. With great power comes great responsibility, and according to Insomniac Games, that will rest solely on the shoulders of Peter Parker and Miles Morales…on their own.
Insomniac's first game came out in 2018 and was quickly praised as one of the best superhero games of all time. We had Miles Morales in 2020, which was more than a DLC but wasn't quite a full game. Now, Peter and Miles are getting together for Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, you and your pals aren't.
Insomniac clears up Spider-Man 2 co-op rumours
Multiple outlets reported that Spider-Man 2 will have co-op, meaning you could save New York City as Peter while your BFF accompanies you as Miles (or vice versa). In September last year, Miles voice actor Nadji Jeter said, "I don't know if it's been announced or not, but I think so," at SacAnime Summer 2022 Q&A.
When Jeter's comments resurfaced, the rumour mill went into overdrive. When one fan tweeted the official Insomniac account asking if co-op is part of the AAA adventure, there was a simple reply of, "Nope! It is an epic single-player adventure!"
So there we go, one is the loneliest number in Spider-Man 2. Despite the first Spider-Man featuring segments and both Miles and Peter (as well as MJ Watson), you could only control them separately. Apart from Peter, the other playable characters were largely for unimportant sections.
Do we have a Spider-Man 2 release date?
Now that we know Spider-Man 2 is wholly single-player, the only other big question is when it will release. Although Insomniac has repeatedly promised we're heading toward a Fall 2023 release, it has refused to give us an exact date.
That could all be solved pretty simply, as a certain Sony State of Play is coming tomorrow (May 24). With over an hour of announcements, we don't see a world where the PS5 exclusive isn't the star of the show. Remember, it was a previous showcase that revealed the studio's Wolverine game.
As for a multiplayer Spider-Man game, we assume Spider-Man 2 will be an even bigger smash than the first game, meaning we could get a whole Web-Head trilogy. If so, Insomniac will hopefully realise the potential of two webs being better than one.
