We're suiting up for another outing with Insomniac Games, as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is ready to swing across the New York City skyline. As the much-hyped sequel to 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man and 2020's Miles Morales, Spider-Man 2 is poised to be a major PlayStation exclusive and one of this year's biggest games.
Taking elements of Rocksteady's acclaimed Arkham games - but with a lighter tone - the OG Spider-Man won a slew of awards and became the best-selling PlayStation 4 game of all time. Still, it wasn't a perfect outing, and there's one particular element players are praying won't be back in Spider-Man 2.
Spider-Man 2 fans are worried MJ stealth missions are back
Although Spider-Man was pretty great, we doubt anyone is excited to relive those Mary Jane Watson stealth missions. We got to play as MJ in the first game, but exploring museums or evading Tombstone was hardly the win it could've been. Insomniac apparently hasn't been listening, as it looks like they're back.
San Diego Comic-Con 2023 gave us a new look at Spider-Man 2, with the story trailer giving us some pretty major reveals. As well as the introduction of Harry Osborn (after previous teases), we get a better look at Kraven the Hunter, a major fight scene with Lizard, and Peter in the Symbiote suit.
Eagle-eyed fans picked on the specific moment at the 1'14" mark where a scared MJ is seen hiding from Peter in the Symbiote suit. If this doesn't scream stealth section, nothing does.
One grumbled, "I think the problem with the MJ missions in the first game was there wasn’t enough emotional engagement. This would definitely fix that," while another added, "I hated the last stealth mission, please no more MJ side missions."
Not everyone hated it though, with one supporter writing, "I wouldn't be against it, a horror segment with MJ being hunted by Spider-Man could be kinda cool." There were actually a lot of other replies, saying Spider-Man 2 could make the most of a horror/stealth mission.
Maybe we're just giving MJ a hard time. Another MJ stan concluded, "I don't care what anyone says, the stealth missions with MJ were enjoyable to say the least. There weren't even that many so it never felt like a negative to me."
Who is Venom in Spider-Man 2?
The writing was already on the wall about who is the man behind the Venom - who Candyman's Tony Todd will voice. The gameplay trailer showed Peter Parker infected with the alien symbiote, although later scenes featuring him and Miles facing off against Venom confirm someone else will be taking on the mantle.
The post-credit scenes of Spider-Man and Miles Morales teased this will be Harry, and with the gameplay trailer properly introducing Peter's BFF, this is pretty much confirmed. Having recovered from his mysterious illness, Harry tells Peter, "We're going to heal the world," which sounds like an ominous warning if ever we've heard one.
With Spider-Man 2 stretching its tendrils into our lives on October 20, expect the Sony marketing machine to go into overdrive promoting the game. There are clearly plenty more secrets to be uncovered, but even with stealth missions, this could still be the best Spider-Man game ever.
