Spider-Man 2 fans fear the worst over ‘missing’ DLC

Our hopes of a Spider-Man 2 DLC might've been dashed by the Insomniac data breach.

Marvel's Spider Man 2 DLC Hopes Fade

Few first-party developers do it quite like Insomniac Games. After its humble start with Disruptor and Spyro the Dragon, Insomniac became synonymous with Ratchet & Clank and has since taken on a whole new challenge with Marvel's Spider-Man.

Having delivered 2018's Spider-Man, 2020's Miles Morales, and 2023's Spider-Man 2, we also know the developer is working on Marvel's Wolverine, as well as leaks suggesting everything from a Venom spin-off to full-blown X-Men game. But is Spider-Man 2's reign already coming to an end?

Gamers worried about Spider-Man 2 DLC

The cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man 2 clearly set things up for an inevitable sequel, which, if done right, could round off one of the greatest video game trilogies of all time. While it looks like we'll finally see the Green Goblin take flight alongside the return of a familiar foe, there are plenty of other dangling plot threads.

Importantly, the inclusion of Cletus Kasady and the tease of Carnage neatly cued a potential symbiote-centric DLC. Considering 2018's Spider-Man gave us The City that Never Sleeps DLC, with three episodes putting Black Cat, Yuri Watanabe, and Silver Sable in the spotlight, we were hoping for more of the same.

As well as Insomniac itself seemingly revealing a female version of Beetle as a villain of the game's DLC, the developer's massive December 2023 ransomware attack showed concept art for the character. The devastating leak also suggested Spider-Man 2 would be getting an online mode this year, but like the DLC, it's nowhere to be seen.

September 24's State of Play seemed like the perfect place to give us an update about what's going on with the Spider-Verse and potentially even show us some Wolverine gameplay, but instead, Insomniac was MIA from the showcase. With this, players are fearing the worst and think the leaks have forced the team to pull a U-turn.

When one fan lamented the lack of Spider-Man 2 DLC news, someone else added, "With the leak, yeah it might never come." Another added, "Yeah I stopped caring a long time ago," while a third joked, "The DLC is the friends we made along the way."

Others are more optimistic and pointed out it hasn't even been a year since Spider-Man 2 was released. Someone else reminded us that Insomniac never actually confirmed a DLC was on the way. Miles Morales was a smaller game, but remember it wrapped up with the main story.

With the leaks, Insomniac presumably hard at work on Wolverine, and it also being struck by layoffs near the start of the year, it might simply be a case that Spider-Man 2's mythical DLC has been caught in a web of woe and will never see the light of day.
