As a franchise, Final Fantasy seems practically endless. With so many numbered entries in the series, and so many spin-offs alongside remakes, it's easy to get lost in the vast ocean of titles that the fantasy favourite has turned out. It's hard to know where to begin.

The classic Final Fantasy games remain one of the best starting points. The most iconic is, of course, Final Fantasy VII, and with the series continuing with Final Fantasy XVI, there's even more for fans to enjoy.

But as it turns out, some devs want the same remake that fans do. It just so happens they're in a position to (potentially) make it happen.

Square Enix wants to remake Final Fantasy 6 too

It seems that when Square Enix is being asked to remake Final Fantasy VI, the call is coming from inside the house. There are plenty that rightly see the RPG as one of the best video games of all time.

A recent roundtable interview with the Final Fantasy team celebrated the series' 35th anniversary, where Vice President Yoshinori Kitase revealed that he's been asked by fans inside the company to focus up on Final Fantasy VI remake. 29 years later, it's well overdue a revamp.

"I think FF VI Remake would be difficult," he says. "FF VII Remake is not yet finished so I am not able to think about it… But for FF VI, there are so many FF VI fans inside the company, and they often ask me 'when are we making VI?'"

Why would Final Fantasy 6 be so difficult to remake?

Kitase has gone on to suggest a Final Fantasy VI remake is likely to be a tough one because it is the last game in the franchise to adopt a pixel-style before it ventured into 3D development with Final Fantasy VII. With this in mind, they'd have to do a lot of restructuring with the game, including elements of the story.

As Hiroyuki Ito and Kitase took over from Hironobu Sakaguchi, there's no one better to tackle the task than Kitase himself. Either way, maybe the excited rumblings of Square Enix's internal fans could make it happen regardless. Now we have another reason to be excited for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - as it gets it out of the way.
