Fans have been waiting for too long for news about the expected remake of Star Wars' RPG crown jewel, and yet, we've been left with little but disappointment.
Knights of the Old Republic has been in need of a fresh lick of paint for quite some time, and while fans have started to get excited for what's to come from the galaxy far, far away, there have been some distressing rumours floating around that indicate we might not get it at all.
But, thankfully, there could be… sigh… a new hope.
Star Wars: KOTOR may still be in development
After rumours claimed the PlayStation-exclusive Knights of the Old Republic remake had been shelved, a fresh update hints that it might not have been halted after all. The news comes from the top itself, with Disney Head of Gaming Sean Shoptaw giving a glimmer of hope.
Speaking to Axios, Shoptaw explained, "Not a lot I can say on that point for some hopefully obvious reasons, but KOTOR is obviously an incredibly popular game, one that we are incredibly proud of and think that there's still a lot of demand for."
This comes after Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported a skeleton team at Saber Interactive is still working on the game. It's in spite of claims that the project didn't have a team at all after Saber engulfed the project from Aspyr.
Schreier said that he can’t attest to the game actually releasing, but the fact that there's still a team implies that some thought is going into the game's creation.
Where did the KOTOR rumours come from?
The Knights of the Old Republic development has been awash with rumours for some time now, but nerves about the project appeared when the remake was taken out of the hands of Aspyr Entertainment and given to Saber Interactive.
Schreier maintains that the demo by Aspyr wasn't so bad that it served as an immediate turn-off but that it was a "misalignment between all the parties about scope and how much progress they could make within a given timeline."
Whatever is going on, it's not a good sign. Even though Disney is at least aware that KOTR is beloved as one of the best RPGs of all time, development is clearly in trouble. Chances are, we won't know about it until the much-hyped remake has been force-choked out of existence.
