As reported by Kotaku, Darin Harris, 29, is facing a felony charge after being booked by the Shelby County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Office on 24 August.

The charges against him include a felony charge for $2,500-$10,000 worth of stolen property, and misdemeanor charges for $1,000 or less of stolen property and possession of marijuana.

The opening of Starfield was leaked online

The first 40 minutes of Starfield was leaked by Harris in a video online, including the opening moments and character customisation options.

Harris' YouTube video went viral on 22 August and was reposting on several social media platforms.

The video has been taken down for copyright infringement by Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media, however clips have been reposted several times. One 60 second leak video on IMGUR has been viewed over a million times.

Harris went on a Social Media spree

Harris took to social media after people who watched the leaked footage pointed out that he didn't seem to know what he was doing in the game.

He said: "I ain’t mad, I know what happens. That game’s smooth. For all the gamers out there who want a different kind of game, that’s definitely something to get. It takes time, you have to read it, you can’t just jump into it, you’ll be jumping around like I was for a minute.

“Todd, no offence man, that’s a good game. Perfect timing, about leaving the earth and all that, it’s good stuff. Pretty swell, good moves. They were saying I play like a beginner because I’m not a game expert, I was just trying something out. That’s a good game, y’all don’t want to miss it. Starfield for real.”

However, the leaker used his social media accounts for more than just reviewing the game, recording himself packing copies of the game that he had seemingly sold online.

Harris allegedly uploaded several listings for versions of the game, including the Constellation Edition, to Mercari, a Japanese online marketplace. It is unknown whether these listings are legitimate or how he came about the copies of the game.

Starfield will be out on 6 September with some players being able to access the game early with the purchase of special editions.
