Starfield players unconvinced by its latest big vehicle rumour

The latest big Starfield rumour is that vehicles are coming in its next update, although some players are unconvinced that ATVs will be able to save the game's dropping player numbers.

While it's fair to say that Bethesda tried to reach for the stars with Starfield, its harshest critics would claim the sci-fi explorer got lost in space. Some 12 years after Skyrim released and nine after Fallout 4, it seems the buggy charm of Bethesda games could be wearing thin.

Still, there are those hoping that Starfield can have its time in the sun if it can pull off a Cyberpunk 2077 with its Shattered Space DLC. Shattered Space is coming at some point later this year, but potentially before then, can Starifeld stick the 'landing' with land vehicles?

Starfield's land vehicles could finally be on the way

Back in a May developer update, Lead Creative Producer Tim Lamb confirmed "the team is working on our first land vehicle" and gave us a brief snippet of the new traversal in action. Given how Starfield's endless romp across barren planets was one of its biggest gripes, land vehicles are more than overdue.

Although the team didn't give us a release date on land vehicles, many assumed they'd be arriving alongside Shattered Space. Now, a leak over on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit suggests it'll be much sooner. Then again, with the OG source being 4chan, we'll take this with a heavy pinch of salt.

If we take the rumour as gospel, land vehicles are supposedly driving into action for the next update. There will reportedly be two variants of land vehicles, the roof-on or roof-off version. Both iterations will boast weapons "which scale depending on your certified skills. The first one is a laser mode that allows you to have bullet time, and the second one is a launcher."

You'll apparently be able to buy ATVs without a hab, with them neatly popping up by your ship. Customisation is limited to changing the colour, which screams of stumping up an extra $5 for more varied customisation. The biggest eyebrow raise is that they might not require fuel and will be invulnerable - which is where this falls apart somewhat.

Even if all of the above is true, it seems Starfield sceptics aren't sold. Many feel the game is running on fumes at the moment, and with the Steam player count struggling to get above 10k, we're holding out for Shattered Space. It's clear that vehicles won't be able to draw some of you back.

Responding to the rumour, one unimpressed gamer wrote, "I still wonder if this DLC will bring people back, because I'm not sure. I remember really liking it while it was fresh, but over the past year I think I've soured on it a bit, booted it up not long ago and realized pretty quickly I just didn't wanna play it anymore."

Another added, "That’s cool but the places you land aren’t really worth exploring. So, it’s kinda like putting a band-aid on a severed limb," and third said, "Wish they would just can this game and focus on elder scrolls." Starfield clearly has an uphill struggle to win around its haters, but if there's anyone that can do it, it's Bethesda.
