Two Valve employees have spoken out about the future of SteamOS during an interview with PC Gamer.

While Valve appears to be working towards putting the OS on PC in the future, it seems likely that it will arrive on other handheld devices long before it ever makes it to computers.

SteamOS will probably come to other handhelds before PC

Valve's Lawrence Yang and Yazan Aldehayyat, two of the longest standing members on the Steam Deck team, spoke to PC Gamer about the possibility of Steam Deck being released on a wider level.

The general consensus is that the OS will be coming “soon”, though there is really no telling exactly when that will be.

When asked when SteamOS would be made available outside of the Steam Deck, Yang said: “It's very high on our list, it's on our list and we are working on it. But a lot of the same people that would make the general install of SteamOS available are the same people that are making Galileo [Steam Deck OLED] work.

"We're hoping soon, though, it is very high on our list, and we want to make SteamOS more widely available. We'll probably start with making it more available to other handhelds with a similar gamepad style controller. And then further beyond that, to more arbitrary devices.

“I think that the biggest thing is just driver support and making sure that it can work on whatever PC it happens to land on. Because right now, it's very, very tuned for Steam Deck."

The similarities between the Steam Deck and other handheld devices currently on the market mean that it would most likely be relatively straight-forward to introduce.

Many of the current Steam Deck competitors, including the Ayaneo Air 1S and ROG Ally use AMD APUs and have similar designs, which would likely make the OS run fairly similarly to how it functions on the native device.

While there is no telling how long it could take for SteamOS to break out of the Steam Deck and into the rest of the portable computer genre of handheld machines, it would definitely solve a lot of the issues that come with the devices.

We can only hope that Valve will keep working on making the operating system more widely available so that we can get our hands on it sooner rather than later.
