Super Mario Maker and its sequel still have an active community, but damn, did it deserve better than it got. A nearly infinite toybox of pieces that allows players to make their own Mario adventures should have been an absolute goldmine.
For those who got involved, it was a treasure trove of Mario-themed joy. The games stand as ones that players turn to if they want to really flex their own artistry - and one new project from a Mario Maker creator has proven that the creativity hasn't stopped flowing by creating an unofficial Super Mario Bros. 5.
Can You Play Super Mario Bros. 5?
Super Mario Maker 2 creator "Metroid Mike 64" has revealed his newest project - a Mario Maker world that he has named Super Mario Bros. 5, as he feels it replicates the wishes of Nintendo when it comes to creating a Mario game.
"This Super World features 40 full courses spread across 8 worlds. 24 courses from Super Mario World, 14 from [Super Mario Bros 3] and 2 courses from [Super Mario Bros].," he shares on Twitter. "There are no courses from [New Super Mario Bros] or [Super Mario 3D World], only the classics. So if NES/SNES 2D Mario is your jam, this game is for you."
The game looks fantastic, and with the clips and screenshots that the creator shares, certainly seems faithful to the design ethos of Nintendo. As you might know, Super Mario Bros. technically bowed out with Super Mario World in 1990, bearing the subtitle Super Mario Bros. 4. There are obviously the New Super Mario Bros. games, but we're still yearning for a proper Mario Bros. 5 from the golden years.
Super Mario Bros 5 Even Comes With End-Of-World Bosses
Much like the games we've come to expect Nintendo to debut on the NES and SNES, Metroid Mike's eight worlds come packed with classic Mario. There are Koopalings serving as unique boss battles at the end of each world, to tie the game together as a whole experience. Our favourite bits are the puzzle-inspired levels honouring the likes of Boo.
As Metroid Mike says, "I'm trying to provide you with something Nintendo should've done already, make a full Mario game within Super Mario Maker 2." The world looks extensive and like fantastic fun, as a testament to the incredible resolve of Mario Maker players. If you're sold, check out this impressive Super Mario Bros. 5 on Super Mario Maker 2, using the following code: OG9-XN4-FNF. Bring back Super Mario Bros., Nintendo, you cowards.
