Anyone that has followed the saga of a smartly groomed Italian plumber will know that he has a chequered past with fire. On his ventures to rescue Princess Peach, Mario's backside is often bronzed by the burning breath of Bowser, his arch-nemesis.
With a hatred for scorched suspenders, it comes as quite a surprise that Mario actually has strong links to the wonderful and wise fire-breathing dragon Paarthurnax.
Paarthurnax, Skyrim's sweetheart, would be better suited to resemble Luigi, considering his emerald coat and knack of being the more knowledgeable of his kind. However, if you strip back the scaled plates, forked tongue, and boiling belly, Paarthurnax is the same person as Mario.
Charles Martinet, an American voice actor, is the languid lips behind both video game characters.
Super Mario Voice Actor
Martinet began voicing for Nintendo in 1990, first taking to live appearances where he would voice behind a 3-D Mario Head. After being prompted by his friend to read for Mario's in-game voice, Martinet actually revolutionised the Italian plumbers sound. Having had a deeper mellow voice in the cartoons prior to 1990, Martinet thought that the low tones were too harsh for children, instead opting for the higher-pitched "Wazoo" that we have become familiar with today.
Having the low pitch in his arsenal must have worked in his favour though. Having moved on to play Mario in countless instalments of the ever-lasting franchise, as well as characters such as Luigi, Wario, Toadsworth, and Waluigi, he landed a job with Bethesda - as a dragon.
Paarthurnax Voice Actor
Despite having depicted Mario for over 20 years prior to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released, Martinet nestled himself as the bellowing yet soft voice of Paarthurnax.
As the wisest of dragons who rose up against the terror of Alduin, Paarturnax is one of Skyrim's most valued characters, circling the throat of the world. Despite having one questline where Dragonborn is ordered to kill the dragon by the Blades, a large majority of players will decide to leave him in peace and give the cult a cold shoulder - or a rain of fire breath learned from Paarthurnax himself.
One player even killed every NPC and animal in the entire of Tamriel, except for Paarthurnax.
Although the two characters couldn't appear to be further apart, Martinet's voicing of Mario and Paarthurnax is simply astonishing.
