Grand Theft Auto 6, Hogwarts Legacy, and the Switch 2. The holy trifecta of gaming announcements we have to look surprised about. At this point, a successor to 2017's Nintendo Switch has been talked about and leaked so many times, we're not sure we can even feign a look of shock when it's finally announced.

Microsoft and Sony have been storming forward with the PS5 and Xbox Series since 2020, but the Switch has somewhat been left in the dust. With talk about mid-gen refreshes for Nintendo's rivals, now is the perfect time for the House that Mario built to play catch-up.

Super Nintendo Switch trends online

It feels like every day comes with some new wild rumour about the Switch 2, although there have been some solid reports that it won't necessarily be a whole console revamp akin to the jump from the Wii U to the Switch. Notably, we're told the Switch 2 will be more of an "iteration," teasing something like a jump from the DS to the 3DS.

Still, no one knows what to call this console, with the likes of the standard Switch 2 and Switch Pro being thrown around. Over on Twitter, Super Nintendo Switch is trending, and we've got to say, we love it. Like how 1990's Super Nintendo Entertainment System succeeded 1983's Nintendo Entertainment System, it makes perfect sense.

Everyone is expecting the Switch 2 to pack more grunt under its colourful shell, and even though we're warned it might only have the specs of the last-gen PS4 and Xbox One, it's still a massive leap for Nintendo. The SNES boasted a 16-bit processor compared to the NES' 8-bit, alongside a tonne of other under-the-hood improvements.

Players demand the Super Nintendo Switch

We don't know whether Shigeru Miyamoto is lurking out there in the Twitterverse, but if Super Nintendo Switch isn't already trademarked, we suggest he gets on it. Unfortunately, Super Nintendo Switch trending has punk'd plenty into thinking it's been officially announced.

Not everyone is sold. One critic chuckled, "If soccer moms and casuals couldn't tell the difference between the Wii and Wii U, then I don't think calling the next console 'Super Nintendo Switch' is a good idea." Another grumbled, "I see that 'Super Nintendo Switch' is trending and while I'd personally like to see that name I think it would be madness business-wise."

Namely, most are disappointed that we're still being held on a string. The Switch 2 rumours are kicking into overdrive, and with whispers of a Nintendo Direct possibly coming in February, there isn't long to wait until we're inevitably disappointed (again) by the lack of Switch 2 announcements.
