Supposed BioShock 4 screenshot teases a very different game

Leaks claim to have an official screenshot from BioShock 4, but with the game potentially in development hell, fans aren't sure whether it's still relevant.

We've been hearing about BioShock 4 since we dived back to the depths of Rapture for BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea DLC, and some 11 years later, we might've finally got our first look at what comes next. Given that 2K officially announced the game in 2019, we've been more than patient.

While the first two BioShock games went under the sea, it was very different as Infinite soared high to the floating city of Columbia. The end of the third game confirms these two seemingly polar opposite worlds are connected, so wherever the franchise goes next, we're expecting another complicated tie to its past.

Potential BioShock 4 screenshot teases a new type of game

MP1st claims to have an official screenshot from BioShock 4, teasing an evolution of the games we've come to love. The screenshot reportedly comes from a 2K Visual Effects Artist, although the site is protecting their identity in case there are ramifications for sharing it.

This shot might not give much away, but we can glean several things from the overhauled UI. The main talking point is the lighthouse-like structure that looks like there's a miniature sun on top. Given the prominence of lighthouses in previous games, it fits the general aesthetic.

There's also a look at the Ricochet Shotgun and two other shotguns, suggesting we'll be able to juggle a trio of guns. Instead of BioShock's Plasmid and Infinite's Vigor meters, there are hourglass symbols that suggest they regenerate over time. The site notices that there could be some kind of time-based abilities.

Coming from an early demo build that was featured in a 2021 showcase reel, we see the "Parkside" placeholder name. Back then, leaker Colin Moriarty said, "It takes place in a 1960s Antarctic city called Borealis. [The game’s] codenamed ‘Parkside’… I've been told that the development team has incredible latitude to get it right."

MP1st reminds us that the massive Epic Games Store leak referred to Parkside as recently as last month. Unfortunately, if this image is from 2021, it could be completely outdated by now. Aside from the fact Cloud Chamber is working on the next outing, things have gone suspiciously quiet on BioShock 4.

There's been a recent flurry of news about BioShock's future, which might've been spurred on by the fact original Game Director Ken Levine is releasing Judas as a spiritual successor in 2025. It's frustrating that after so many years, all we have to go off is an unofficial screenshot that might be completely out of date.
