It's hard to keep up with what's going on in the world of The Sims, and even more confusing than trying to keep up with the various expansions to The Sims 4, it appears there's a new spin-off to contend with. Fans were recently dismayed to learn The Sims 5 isn't happening, and now, EA is rattling an already annoyed fandom.
The blocky origins of The Sims on PC seems like a distant memory, and with 24 years of games and expansions, it really is. Now, a new listing for a mobile-only Sims game has left players worrying about the franchise's microtransaction-packed future.
The Sims Labs: Town Stories isn't the game you wanted

A mystery listing for The Sims Labs: Town Stories has appeared on the Google Play Store, showing off a very different type of Sims experience. Taking us away from the bustling sights of your typical neighbourhood, players set up shop in the picturesque Plumbrook.
Described as "an all-new exciting building simulation game," screenshots show how you'll have to help build the town and interact with its cartoonish residents. EA recently hyped its The Sims Labs programme, which is designed to test "many new ways to play The Sims." It looks like Town Stories is the first chapter, although you seem less than impressed.
When news of The Sims Labs: Town Stories was shared on the game's subreddit, it was quickly ravaged by those who hate everything about it. From accusations of using AI for its poster, to its overreliance on microtransactions, there was hardly much enthusiasm for this cash-grab spin-off.
One disgruntled Simmer raged, "The Sims franchise has turned into what the Sims originally was making fun of consumerism and greed." Another added, "This is like that weird art for those puzzle swipe scape garden clean your house save your grandma games," and a third said, "This would be cute if it were 2015."
Someone else concluded, "What are they even trying to accomplish with this? Replace Sims Mobile with Project Rene AND this? Who the f is approving these?? As a fan from TS1, I am sad to see what they are doing with the franchise. They are bringing out games just for money, they don't show any respect towards the game nor towards the fans."
With worries that Town Stories and whatever Project Rene is are trying to replace The Sims Mobile, there's a concerning comment that suggests those who grew up with the classic Sims 1 and Sims 2 experience aren't the target market anymore. We know things have to evolve, but it doesn't take a Scientist Career path to figure out this one isn't a hit with fans.
