Well, it looks like Borderlands is 'gearing' up for something of a comeback. The looter shooter's popularity has simmered a little since its last mainline title launch, but even as its sales seemed to taper out, Gearbox Software has kept eyes vaguely on the franchise with Tiny Tina's Wonderlands tiding fans over.

With Eli Roth's Borderlands movie coming out soon, renewed excitement could be about to hit. The movie needs to be good first, but we'll remain cautiously optimistic. On top of all of this, it looks like a new dawn is about to begin because Borderlands 4 is officially on the way amidst new ownership.

A brand-new press release has come from Embracer and reveals that its stake in Gearbox has been snatched up by Take-Two. It's a hugely expensive deal, but you'll all know how lucrative it could be thanks to Take-Two being the parent company that looks after Rockstar Games.

The acquisition has been completed without debt by a sum of a whopping $460 million, and it now gives Take-Two access to the Borderlands and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands franchises, along with Homeworld, Risk of Rain, Brothers in Arms and Duke Nukem.

Embracer has retained a few studios in the buyout, like publishing rights to the Remnant franchise and Hyper Light Breaker. For all intents and purposes, the treasure trove of Gearbox is now under the watch of Take-Two. Of course, it doesn't end there for Borderlands fans.

Borderlands 4 has been officially announced

A separate press release has finally gone ahead and announced that Gearbox is busy amidst the business deal - it's officially working on a brand-new Borderlands title, as well as a new game in the Homeworld series. This would be the first mainline entry since 2019's Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 4 had been teased for years and seemingly popped up on LinkedIn, but at least we finally have official word on the project. Gearbox also revealed that it is developing "at least one exciting new intellectual property" too, so clearly theres much more to come from the company.

Aside from being in development, we don't know anything about the games right now - but for some fans, that'll be enough. Borderlands 4 has been a long time coming, especially as Borderlands 3 didn't exactly meet expectations across the board. We'll be glad to return to the bonkers series, and now, it looks like Take-Two will be benefitting too.
