Despite being in its relative infancy, Embark Studios' The FINALS has shown some incredible promise in recent weeks. There's little doubt that the title has earned its place in the gaming world, but it looks like it's got the gaming world to contend with.
The game seems to be ready to compete with the best objective-based shooters on the market right now, boasting loud visuals and a breakneck pace to set it apart from the VALORANTs and Counter-Strikes of the world. Sadly, THE FINALS is suffering a player-drop off that could threaten its standing against the giants.
The FINALS' player numbers are falling off
In a pretty concerning turn, the player numbers of The FINALS are ticking downwards. Although it's far from finished, there are worries it could indicate that interest is tanking on a wider scale.
According to new data from SteamDB, The FINALS is very clearly on a downward trend on Steam, with the game turning over 30,209 players at the time of writing. This is in contrast to its all-time peak of 242,619 and a very promising start.
The graph on the site shows that since December, The FINALS has slowly been dropping players, and it isn't a good look. Optimists are hoping that the potential for seasonal content could rejuvenate player numbers, but as we're still holding out hope for any kind of announcement on that front, things aren't looking good.
Stardew Valley is doing better than The FINALS right now
A quick glance at the SteamDB charts is enough to show you the fall that The FINALS has suffered. More players are engaged in Stardew Valley (a farming title from early 2016) than the incredibly modern shooter. It's equally beaten out by Don't Starve Together, Hearts of Iron IV, and Lost Ark.
Holding the 35th position in Steam charts isn't that poor when all things are considered, but to only just top Battlefield V probably wasn't what the news the Embark team was holding out for. It's a pretty big shame, and we're hoping it can recoup player numbers. After all, the shooter genre could do with a little more friendly competition.
