If you can't beat them, join them. The First Descendant has launched its jets and landed in a saturated sci-fi looter shooter genre that's populated by familiar beings like Destiny and Warframe.
Nexon's futuristic title has already been criticised for its "nonsensical" story, although that doubles as a fun way to focus on blasting aliens into oblivion without having to worry about the implications of an overarching narrative.
Now, The First Descendant has been accused of ripping off its competitors, as it looks like Nexus has looted Destiny and Warframe for all of its identity.
The First Descendant loots Destiny for its icons
Starting off with icons, Forbes has revealed some startling similarities between the assets from The First Descendant and those used in Destiny.
Forbes showcased almost-perfect replications of the icons used in perks like Recycling Genius, Edging Shot, and more, mirroring Destiny 2's collection of perks like Outlaw and Explosive Payout, respectively. The report already shows eight almost-perfect recreations of Destiny Perks
This can be somewhat forgiven, as many shooter games have similar icons for headshot-enhancing perks or a sort of FMJ icon, but given the direct competition between The First Descendant and Destiny, the blurred lines come off as rather cheesy. However, it doesn't stop at just icons.
Destiny's weapons are being nabbed by The First Descendant
The looting has also spread to weapons. Again, there's some leniency here as to how many sniper models there are to create a working gun from, but the similarities to Destiny are moving from mere coincidence into a conspiracy.
From the elongated barrel to the diamond-styled body, the First Descendant's Different Dream sniper is almost identical to Bungie's IKELOS sniper in Destiny.
Forbes did note that the name, Different Dream, could infer that the sniper is a homage to Destiny, rather than a rip-off, although that could also be an easy defence to hide behind.
Players are sold on the theory of stolen assets too. On Reddit, one fan commented, "That's not surprising given everything else is a 1:1 ripoff of Warframe as well."
"I guess the creatives that came up with "GREG" as the name of a big bad probably have trouble with creating anything interesting themselves."
At least The First Descendant can take the title of "best looter" when it comes to assets, although the jury is still out to see whether it can rival Destiny and Warframe in the long run.
