The Last Of Us Fans Think They Know How Season 2 Will End

HBO's The Last of Us is ready to claw its way back into our lives, as the mushroom monsters of Naughty Dog's beloved game series are destined to cause trouble for Ellie and Joel. With Season 1 being praised as one of the best video game adaptations of all time and breaking rating records for the network, the bar is set high for Season 2.

It's destined to be a long wait until The Last of Us Season 2 airs in 'early' 2025, and with just seven episodes in this season, we're expecting to only dip our toes in the events of 2020's The Last of Us Part II. The game proved to be particularly Marmite, so let's hope the live-action adaptation can turn that perception around.

Showrunner Craig Mazin is aiming for the magic number of four seasons, meaning fans are trying to figure out which bits of Part II will be told over the next three seasons. Now, they think they know exactly how Season 2 will end.

Warning: spoilers ahead for The Last of Us Part 2

My guess: This is the final frame of the season.

Over on The Last of Us subreddit, eagle-eyed viers think they've pinpointed the final shot of Season 2. Among the newcomers for Season 2 is Kaitlyn Dever as Abby Anderson, who gamers will know is the de facto big bad of Part II before the narrative flips over to her in the second half.

Abby might be a particularly hated character due to the events that happen early in Part II, but, like how The Walking Dead proves even the supposedly heroic Rick Grimes can appear as a villain to other survivors, the second half reveals Abby's true motives.

As a recap, Abby kills Joel Miller in cold blood, brutally bludgeoning him to death with a golf club in the opening "Jackson" chapter. It's later revealed via flashbacks that Abby kills Joel because he's responsible for murdering her father at the end of the first game. Redditor u/Havahge thinks that the shot of Abby by a grave will be how Season 2 ends.

Someone else suggested, "For a while I thought that season 2 could end in the theater with the arrival of Abby, but I think it would be better if it ends with the revelation of who (and why) Abby did what she did, considering that we could wait a while for the other season it's inevitable that people will spoil, so hopefully your prediction is good."

Another added, "I think if there’s one thing Neil and Craig are going to try and do, it’s to replicate the emotional journey we go through in the game as much as possible. For that reason, I reckon they’re not going to reveal who Abby is, or her motives, until very late in the season. That way, the non-gamers will hate her at least as long as we did."

Given Joel's death toward the start of Part II, we're rightly worried that Pedro Pascal's gruff father figure won't be around for long. Another chimed in, "IMO it would be odd to force the audience to ask the question of who Abby is and why she did it at the beginning of the season, and then choose not to resolve that mystery by the end of the season."

Although we're sure some elements of the games will be revamped like in Season 1, there's no way a moment as iconic as Joel's death won't be playing out in front of our eyes. Back in 2023, Pascal told Esquire, "It wouldn’t make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to stray severely from the path," while Bella Ramsey added, "If that does take place in the show, I don’t know that I’m emotionally ready for it."

After Season 1 brilliantly wrapped up the events of the first game, it'll be interesting to see how fans react to the inevitable cliffhanger Season 2 is sure to end on. Remembering the backlash that Game of Thrones faced for making us wait to find out what happened to Jon Snow after the Season 5 finale, let's hope HBO has learned not to p*ss off its fandom with a Joel cliffhanger.
