The Mafia series has laid a little dormant in recent years. Mafia III was released to a chorus of sighs - never really managing to capitalise on the gangster potential that the game had straight out of the gate. For lack of a better term for it, it kinda fell off after that.
There's still hope for a sequel from 2K, and as luck would have it, a new mainline title has been leaked as a glossy adventure in Unreal Engine 5. If you're a fan of the movies, its plot might sound kinda familiar.
What Is The Mafia 4 Story Leak?
Thanks to popular leaker Shpeshal Nick, who revealed the details on the recent XboxEra podcast, we now know that Mafia 4 is in development and working on a story. But, the game's setting and narrative could be pretty surprising to long-term fans of the franchise.
According to Nick, the upcoming Mafia game will focus on the life of Don Salieri. For those who've played previous Mafia games, you'll know Salieri was a character introduced in the first game, with his experiences in Sicily along with his rise to power at the end of the 19th century.
After the Mafia games being stuck in the USA for the past 20 years, it's about time we had a change of scenery. This is an interesting narrative to take up, especially as it's a brand-new location for the franchise - but it's probably worth noting something about it.
Isn't The Mafia 4 Story Just The Godfather?
A story about burgeoning organised crime that overwhelms the lives of those involved, taking its narrative to the Sicilian Isles of Italy? Why, that sounds familiar… Though it might not be bang on the money, this seems like it could be appealing directly to fans of The Godfather.
Remember when Michael Corleone returned to his father's birthplace in Sicily after murdering Virgil Sollozzo? Mafia 4 should be able to carve out an identity of its own, but it's hard to ignore the similarities between the Sicily story and the events of The Godfather. However, it does sound like a hell of a lot of fun. Sicilian adventures in the Mafia universe sound like a great offer - maybe even one that we can't refuse.
