Since The Outer Worlds 2 was announced back in 2021, not much has been revealed about the game.
It was recently revealed that Tim Cain, one of Fallout’s co-creators, will be consulting on the project, despite now being semi-retired.
A Fallout legend is consulting on The Outer Worlds 2
In a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Tim Cain revealed that he has been working as a consultant on The Outer Worlds 2.
Cain previously served as a director on the first Outer Worlds game alongside Fallout co-creator Leonard Boyarsky.
He said: “There’s stuff they’re trying to do in the sequel, that of course I can’t talk about, that I get pulled in on because it’s similar to stuff I’ve done in the past.
“Sometimes it’s just me saying, ‘I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but here are the pitfalls. Here are some of the huge, huge chasms that lie in your way, that you’re gonna have to wend around.’”
Cain was one of the biggest voices on the original Fallout game, working on it as the producer, designer and lead programmer.
He went on to work on other major titles including Fallout 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and, of course, The Outer Worlds.
Not much is currently known about The Outer Worlds 2
The trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 was released in June 2021 and not much has been shared about the project since.
While Cain was careful not to spoil anything about the upcoming game, he did say that a problem which had plagued the team working on the original Fallout was solved by one of the developers.
Cain praised the person who solved the issue, stating: “I not only told him how impressed I was, I found my notes from 28 years before. I said, ‘Let me read you a few lines from a production meeting in July of ‘95…’”
Though this doesn’t tell us anything about what the game could involve, it does suggest that it will be bringing something new and exciting that Fallout developers had hoped to include in the game.
Unfortunately, there will likely still be a while to wait before we see The Outer Worlds 2 brought to life, as Obsidian is currently focussed on developing Avowed, a fantasy RPG which is set to release later this year.
