2025 marks a decade since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt secured its legacy as one of the best video games of all time, and while we were still dining on its Blood and Wine DLC in 2016, we're hungry for more from The Witcherverse. We know a fourth mainline game is on the way, and with it, we expect Geralt to soon be back in the saddle.
As the titular Witcher of the games, Geralt of Rivia has become a legend in the gaming world. Having led the first four games and Netflix's live-action series, Geralt is was always expected to return in The Witcher 4. However, those who've read Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher novels might be concerned about where Geralt's arc is heading.
Geralt voice actor has us worried for The Witcher 4
Doing nothing to put our fears at rest, Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle has confirmed that while he'll be back for The Witcher 4, he might not be the MVP this time around. Speaking to Fall Damage, Cockle explained, "Geralt will be part of the game, we just don't know how much. The game won't focus on Geralt, so it's not about him this time."
Although the actor says he hasn't seen a script and doesn't know who it's about, Ciri is the most obvious choice as the next lead. One of the few complaints about The Witcher 3 is that you didn't get to play as Ciri enough, but that could be rectified this time around.
We imagine playing as Geralt for the first part of the game before flipping over to Ciri, which is similar to The Last of Us. Of course, this has us questioning why Geralt isn't a major player in the next game, and following in The Last of Us' footsteps, could CD Projekt Red really pull a Joel Miller on Geralt?
Responding to the video, one gamer said, "Was it ever really said that Geralt would be a part of W4? I don't think so. That's huge (not that I didn't expect it, still it's good to be sure)." Another concerned fan added, " Damnit Geralt is no longer the main character in The Witcher 4 feels bad man."
We'd already mused about Geralt's return, with The Witcher 4 Game Director Sebastian Kalemb teasing it (via Insider Gaming). Back then, Kalemb similarly teased that Geralt would appear in a supporting role. Obviously, it's possible that the next game simply goes in a different direction and gives us someone new to play as without killing Geralt off.
Some have suggested that you will be the main character, with a Cyberpunk-inspired creation system where you get to make your own Witcher that's sent on a new adventure. This could allow Geralt to return in a capacity similar to Vessemir.
It's no secret that the next game is working under the codename "Polaris" and won't have The Witcher 4 as its official title. After Wild Hunt rounded off the original trilogy, it makes sense that CDPR wants to chart a new era. The question is, which of The Witcher 3's 36 (yes, 36) endings will be made canon?
