There’s a sneaky way to run Modern Warfare 3 at 120 FPS

The future of the CoDverse is here, and as we get ready for Call of Duty's next outing, there's a sneaky way to buff Modern Warfare 3. Following the first Beta weekend for 2023, we got a glimpse at what Sledgehammer has been working on behind the scenes.

Our first peek behind the curtain at the next Call of Duty led to complaints that it wasn't quite looking as new-gen as it should. There were accusations that the maps looked "dull," and although players have since fixed it themselves, there's a simple way you can make it look like MW3 is firing on all cylinders.

How to run Modern Warfare 3 at 120 FPS?

PlayStation 5 owners can dial Modern Warfare 3 up to a glossy 120 FPS, and better yet, it's easy to do it. While the introduction of the PS5 in 2020 allowed CoD players to crank things up to 120 FPS with Black Ops Cold War, it's become a recurring tradition - being a popular option in 2022's MW2.

Firstly, you need to make sure your TV or monitor can support 120 FPS, with monitors needing 120Hz refresh rates. Once that's done, it's just a few steps before your MW3 will be shining in 120 FPS:

  • Access the PS5 settings screen
  • Open Screen and Video
  • Locate the 120Hz Output
  • Ensure 'Automatic' is selected
  • Voila, Modern Warfare 3 should be running at 120 FPS

Be warned that you might be faced with a blank screen when booting MW3, which is because the screens need to adjust to these new settings. Double-check that you're running 120 FPS by opening your MW3 settings and finding the Graphics menu, then ensure '120Hz Refresh Rate' is in the 'On' position.

Does the FPS argument really matter?

As we start to leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind, the debate of FPS rages on. Modern Warfare 3 has been caught in the 60 FPS crossfire, with occasional dips knocking it back. Games like Starfield and Gotham Knights have been called out for running at 30 FPS, but then again, that did The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom no harm.

PC players have it a little easier, with the Modern Warfare 3 Open Beta promising a performance boost thanks to Nvidia's latest Game Ready Driver giving us DLSS 2 and Nvidia Reflex. Nvidia has also confirmed the full November 10 launch will have DLSS 3, boasting a truly new-gen outing.

While there was a period when we thought MW3 would be annexed from last-gen consoles, the title is now confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One. We imagine it'll be the last Call of Duty to grace these ageing systems, and as some look ahead to the PS5 and next Xbox, expect 120FPS to eventually become the gold standard of CoD.
