Treyarch goes hard on round-based Zombies amidst Outbreak return rumours

Treyarch is going all-in on round-based Zombies, and while Call of Duty players are happy about the return of a classic, it's left Outbreak out in the cold for 2024.

Despite some form of undead action taking place in both Vanguard and Modern Warfare 3. It's been four years since Treyarch's signature Zombies modes were last seen in Call of Duty.

The developer has mastered the craft of "round-based" Zombies as its core mode, making it exclusive to the Black Ops series (and WaW).

So, after the biggest gap between round-based Zombies maps ever, Treyarch has pledged to focus entirely on this type of gameplay for the duration of Black Ops 6.

Treyarch commits to a full year of round-based Zombies only

Round-Based Zombies isn't the only way that Treyarch has reanimated the undead, having allowed modes like Outbreak, the open-world MWZ, and whatever the heck Vanguard was.

But with murmurs that Treyarch might be planning to divert focus to Outbreak again, the developer have confirmed that "Black Ops 6 will focus exclusively on Round Based Zombies content."

On top of Terminus and Liberty Falls, Black Ops 6 will have more maps released throughout the seasonal content, continuing the storyline where the legendary Edward Richtofen stars as the main antagonist.

Outbreak 2.0 rumoured for 2025 release

Ultimately, this means that Outbreak is seemingly out in the cold this year - despite its popularity. However, there were rumours before Treyarch's statement that Outbreak is being made and will feature on the upcoming Warzone map known as Avalon.

The catch is that Avalon isn't slated to release until - at a best-case scenario - November 2025. That's because Treyarch's Black Ops 6 battle royale map is set to be Verdansk.

Akin to Modern Warfare's double-header, this all plays into the assumption that Black Ops is getting back-to-back games and the Black Ops 2-centric year-two game will be released.

Otherwise, Outbreak and Avalon could be put on hold until Treyarch's next Call of Duty, which would be after Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games both get another crack at annual releases (yes, it's all very confusing).

For now though, it's round after round, wave after wave, horde after horde of zombies action for the next 12 months, minimum. It seems our patience has been paying off, so enjoy.
