Microsoft is full of surprises, and some of them are more peculiar than others - although we haven't seen many of them since it's still trying to process the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
It's taken a lot of work and it's hard to expect much else from the company in the meantime, but even so, convincing the business world that Phil Spencer isn't cornering the market by buying the company has taken some work.
As a part of this convincing, Xbox has committed to bringing series developed by Activision Blizzard to the Nintendo Switch. It should be just like the good old days of Black Ops on the Wii and Modern Warfare 3 on the DS, but not everyone is convinced that it will work.
UK regulator is unconvinced by Call of Duty on Switch
In the wake of PlayStation being sceptical of Xbox's promises to bring Call of Duty to other consoles, it looks like one regulator isn't sure that it'd work out in the first place.
The UK's Competition and Markets Authority has questioned whether or not the offer from Xbox can come together in any meaningful way. It's because of the technical differentiation between Call of Duty's more advanced development and the Switch's comparative technical weaknesses.
"We have also seen evidence that large shooter games do not run as well on Nintendo's consoles due to its technical differentiation," reads a new report.
It continues, "One third party submitted that graphically intensive shooters may often be targeted originally at PlayStation and Xbox due to the specific characteristics of their console performance.
"Porting to the Nintendo Switch may require financial investment and compromises on graphical quality or the use of cloud-gaming solutions." It comes after Microsoft President Brad Smith warned CoD would run as "people would expect" on the Switch.
Will Call Of Duty Really Come To Switch?
It's an interesting predicament that Xbox and Nintendo find themselves in, as ports of the Call of Duty series have always been pretty vastly underpowered or drastically altered to make way for the sincere lack of operating power in the console - just look at the series' games on the Nintendo DS.
We're sure that if the deal goes through, Xbox will make good on its deal - but even in the face of cloud gaming's advancements, it's hard to imagine that the Switch can offer the exact same experience as its more powerful console compatriots. Just like old times.
