FromSoftware has turned out some amazing titles over the years, and from Bloodborne to Elden Ring, it's helped define the Souls-like genre. Now, someone is taking over from the devs to give them a rest by creating their own (unofficial) Dark Souls sequel.

Heading back to the early days of FromSoft, it made a name for itself with Armored Core before reinventing with Demon's Souls in 2009. However, when it comes to mainstream success, it's arguably 2011's Dark Souls that brought the developer into our lives. There have been three Dark Souls games already, but how about a fourth?

What Is The Dark Souls Sequel?

As reported by GamesRadarDark Souls: Nightfall is a spin-off from the official Dark Souls series, which is created entirely by modders with a passion for the OG. Although a demo was released earlier this year, it seems that progress has ground to a Turtle Pope-inspired speed.

Explaining what's been going on, modder Scott "Grimrukh" Mooney told those who are impatient to hack their way back into Lordran that "we're working on it consistently and it's genuinely getting closer to release every week." Grumrukh added, "The boring reason for the delay is that we've simply had less time than expected to work on this year, even after accounting for the predictably asteroid-sized distraction of Elden Ring."

More than just putting time into Elden Ring, FromSoft's latest release has overhauled the way Nightfall looks and plays. In particular, bosses are being reworked because of "standards recently set by Elden Ring." The ambitious mod was supposed to remix familiar bosses with newcomers, but according to Grumrukh, the differences to "too sharp, especially in a post-Elden Ring world."

When Will Dark Souls: Nightfall Release?

Dark Souls: Nightfall is from the team behind the beloved Daughters of Ash mod, with work ongoing since 2019. It was originally targeting a December 2021 release, but as with all these things, that's understandably slipped. Nightfall is a direct sequel to Dark Souls, which will expand the world's lore without encroaching on what was established in the first game.

With a whole new world map, a faster-based combat system, and new voice-acted NPCs, it's no surprise Nightfall has grown into a much bigger beast - even without learning from Elden Ring. If you're hoping 2022 will be the year for Souls-likes, Grimrukh has a grim update that he doesn't think Nightfall will be out this year. It's not impossible to see it before the end of the year, but don't hold your breath. At least we'll have something else to look forward to in 2023.
