It's hard to believe it's been nearly 30 years since Pixar reinvented animation forever, but in 2025, it's three decades since Toy Story jumped out of the toybox as the world's first entirely computer-animated feature film. John Lasseter's movie has left a massive legacy with an expanded franchise of sequels, merchandise, games, and more.
There are plenty of video games based on the Toy Story movies, with a particular highlight being 1999's Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear To The Rescue. Gaming has obviously come a long way since then, and with Disney officially working on Toy Story 5, why wouldn't there be more games based on Andy's old pals?
Unreal Engine 5 Toy Story game blows us away
Concept gamer TeaserPlay is known for their impressive builds, giving us everything from an open-world Mandalorian game to a God of War remake, supersized Black Panther outing to a return to Shrek's swamp. The trailer for this Unreal Engine 5 Toy Story game takes us back to 1995...but with a 2024 twist.
Although it's missing Randy Newman's iconic score, it feels like we're watching Toy Story for the first time. Flipping between playing as Woody and Buzz, the trailer features cameos from fan-favourites like Mr. Potato Head, Ham, and Rex, recreating scenes from the OG movie.
We can only imagine a fully open-world Toy Story game where we get to visit Pizza Planet, try and catch the moving truck with RC, and dodge the sadistic Sid. TeaserPlay's concept also includes Emperor Zurg, which we assume would be a gruelling boss battle.
The trailer ends with Buzz and Woody soaring across the neighbourhood, a feat that Disney Interactive couldn't have achieved with its 1995 side-scrolling Toy Story game. These days, Andy's toys are known for their appearance in the Kingdom Hearts games, and with no Toy Story 4 tie-in game, we've overdue some Toy Story content.
As open-world games become the norm and developers try to nap into our nostalgia for beloved IPs, the idea of a new-gen Toy Story game isn't that out there. With a little luck, someone at Disney will see TeaserPlay's content and realise we could make some serious bank on a Toy Story game.
