Weirdly, Valve has had to tell people to stop inhaling the fumes that come out of their Steam Deck.
Though it has become a bit of a joke online about how many people like the smell of their Steam Deck’s vents, and Valve has said there’s no safety concerns from general usage of the device, it is definitely not advisable to sniff it.
Valve say stop inhaling your Steam Deck fumes
Earlier this week, Reddit user Metapod100 shared a screenshot of communication they had with the Valve Support team.
They asked Steam Support: “Is it safe to inhale the exhaust fumes from the top vent of the Steam Deck? It's somewhat of a meme to enjoy the fumes but I think I kinda... like it?”
Unfortunately, Valve’s response does not bode well for fans of their Steam Deck’s smell.
In response, Steam Support said: “Thank you for contacting Steam Support. As with all electronics, it is generally not recommended you inhale the exhaust fumes on your device.
“While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device's
vent fumes should be avoided.
“We understand that it may be a meme, but please refrain from this behaviour for the safety of your health.”
Steam Deck players don’t seem interested in Valve’s warning
In response to Valve’s warning, several Reddit commenters expressed that they would not be changing their Steam Deck sniffing ways.
One user said: “I'm afraid it's already too late for 80% in the sub. See you all on the other side.”
Another added: “At least we truly lived!”
Others think Valve should capitalise on the scent’s popularity and help prevent safety concerns by selling a similar fragrance.
A Reddit user wrote: “If Valve released an air freshener with that smell...oh man I'd buy it.”
At the end of the day, it is probably a good idea not to inhale the fumes coming out of your Steam Deck, no matter how good it smells.
