Warzone’s fourth anniversary has fans pining for Verdansk’s ‘magic’

Warzone fans have called for the rollback of the original game after celebrating its fourth birthday, claiming that it's unable to recapture the magic of Verdansk.

On its fourth birthday, Warzone finds itself in quite a strange place. The battle royale title remains relatively popular, with a returning player count and the opportunity to kick on from where they are, should Activision and Microsoft want to continue with the model. On the other hand, Warzone isn't quite what it once was.

As players celebrate the four years that have gone by, there appears to be a favourable weight towards the second stance, and reminiscing over the ages has only upset those players who have enjoyed every ride.

Warzone celebrates its fourth birthday with throwback video

To celebrate four years of Warzone, Activision has now released a video on social media which pays homage to its history.

The video was also accompanied by a whole website dedicated to the timeline of Warzone, moving from its March 10, 2020 launch, to other milestones like Stadium's opening - and demolition - Rebirth Island's introduction and the most recent Urzikstan excursion.

The social media account also shared some players' favourite memories, such as C4'ing helicopters, squad-wipes with the Grau, and duos clutches on Fortune's Keep.

But one thing the memorial had in common is that the clips came from the early days, and it's clear that Verdansk was much more popular and memorable than the clips we see nowadays.

Warzone fans fear the title will never recapture the 'magic of Verdansk'

Having seen the trip down memory lane, players quickly realised that the glory days actually were much better than what we have now and have again asked for the re-release of the original title. "It's time to cut their losses and just re-release Warzone," said the Redditor.

"Do it in its original form and update it from there quickly with some of the things we have learned over time like Redeploy Balloons for Verdansk. They can't recreate the magic, they can't make a new version because they don't know what they did to make it great the first time."

Warzone could learn a lot from Apex Legends in this manner, though. It once was a popular title tailored towards casuals, leaned into the skid caused by drop-offs, and warped into a competitive-first game that still boasted enough new content to appease the masses.
