The battle royale scene once started with vastly different titles excelling in different areas, such as realism, arcade, and looter-shooter, but over time, each developer has intermarried their original design with another competitor.
Now, we have a handful of rather incestuous games, all trying to be each other. Call of Duty especially seems really keen to marry into the Apex Legends bloodline as it continues to steal some of its features.
World Series of Warzone to implement Apex Legends' patented match point system
Apex Legends is arguably the best battle royale when it comes to esports (especially in the Western hemisphere, PUBG Mobile deserves a mention in the East), and part and parcel of that comes with its patented format.
Respawn and EA's success has very much been down to the "match point" formula, which means any team who has moved over a threshold of points through placements and kills must then win a match to be crowned champions.
This format can see anywhere between one and twenty teams all on match point, making the stakes incredibly high - especially during the end-games. This had previously been an Apex-only feature due to a patent, but now, Warzone appears to be adding it to the World Series Grand Finals.
Activision has announced that the World Series of Warzone will be held in Las Vegas this year, which is ironic considering the median age group, especially having visited London in 2023 for its inaugural LAN.
Call of Duty Esports General Manager Daniel Tsay said, "This year we’ve expanded to a 2-day competition, allocated more prizing to this LAN and will be implementing a match point format for an exciting finish."
It's not clear if, or how, Activision has gotten around the EA patent, but Warzone fans might finally be in for a treat as the ante of each individual game at the World Series has just escalated significantly.
