Call of Duty: Warzone’s riot shield isn’t one that’s often used, but those who often opt to use it are glad they do. The almost-weapon has saved a lot of players in a lot of pinches, offering them great protection against a slew of bullets in scenarios of almost certain doom. It’s a big risk to take it into a slot that could be filled by a weapon, but when it works, it works.

And for those it works best for, there could be a nasty shock on the way, as the way in which the riot shield is implemented into Warzone has received a big change, and could jeopardize those last-minute saves.

The big season four update of course brought a lot of changes to Warzone and Black Ops Cold War, but a big one for users of the Riot Shield has gone under the radar. The spawning habits of the shield have been entirely overhauled, removing them from loot boxes completely. They’ve now been relegated to loadout drops only, so unless you’ve got it in one of your favourite classes, you’re out of luck, and won’t be seeing one in-game.

The riot shield has caused a lot of frustration for players of Warzone, but it’s also an iconic part of the Call of Duty framework, so it’s a shame to see it take such a back seat.

The developers have confirmed that this is only a temporary change and that it’ll come back to loadout drops soon enough, but they’ve offered no explanation as to why this change has been made. If there was something wrong with the item, surely it wouldn’t be allowed in loadouts either?

It’s a shame for riot shield users, but it isn’t the end of the world, as at least we can still drop it in our loadouts to save our skins a little.
