Coming up with new battle royale maps seems to be quite a task for the Call of Duty developers, who have never really mustered up something to rival the GOAT of Verdansk.

Even Treyarch, the fabled designer of Blackout, has passed up the opportunity to release a new large-scale map this year, seemingly opting to re-release Verdansk (and delay it too). So, what if the community could lend a hand?

Activision opens up Caldera blueprints as 'learning resource'

Activision has announced that it's opening up the data set for its Caldera map to the public, all in a bid to use it in academics and research alongside aiding AI learning.

The data includes over one billion assets to see how Caldera was formed and also features behavioural patterns in how players moved around the map. It shows hundreds of popular paths, whether that be landing at Peak and flying off, or starting on the outskirts and rotating inward.

This means that Activision can now learn from other academics on what could be changed or improved, which can benefit them in the future. It also opens up interesting possibilities about fan-made POIs...

Warzone fans ponder map tool kits after Caldera data arrives

Fortnite went through a stage of adding fan-made POIs to the map, with "The Block", before Creative was reinvigorated and the Unreal Engine 5 projects began turning into complete and wonderful universes of content. So, Call of Duty fans want a slice of that action too.

If a tool kit was added to this data set, fans could alter different POIs with the assets available and help Activision make smarter landscapes in the future. It could also serve as a Fortnite Creative-like blueprint where new POIs could be formed and used.

Custom maps have been on the wishlist for Call of Duty fans for some time, but maybe a Warzone POI mapper might be just as popular.
