Karting games are everywhere, with some weird and wonderful franchises getting behind the wheel. From the good of Mario Kart to the bad of 007 Racing and the ugly of M&M's Kart Racing, we've seen it all. Now, Shrek is lumbering out of his swamp and back behind the wheel.
After the success of Mario Kart, we had an influx of karting games that are still being played today. Alongside big ones like Diddy Kong Racing and Crash Team Racing, we've raced across the finish line with Team Sonic Racing, Nickelodeon Kart Racers, and even Garfield Kart, but what about Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing?
DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing looks like a Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing sequel
Gamemill Entertainment is publishing DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing, which is being developed by Bamtang Games. You might remember that Bamtang is known for developing the Nickelodeon Kart Racers. The Mario Kart-inspired game takes some of DreamWorks' biggest IPs and merges them together with all your favourites.
As well as characters like How to Train Your Dragon's Hiccup, there's The Boss Baby's titular Boss Baby, and Kung Fu Panda's Po. The big draw for many will be Shrek and his surrounding characters, with the big man himself being joined by Donkey and Puss in Boots.
There are themed tracks like Madagascar's New York City Zoo, Trolls' Bergen Town, and the Kingdom of Far Far Away from Shrek. The Trolls Characters run the races, where racers collect those adorable critters to ride with them and boost their abilities.
It's a pretty standard formula, but for many, Shrek is stealing the show. In 2006, Shrek Smash n' Crash Racing revved into our lives with a roster that boasted Shrek, Donkey, Puss, Fiona, Gingy, and more. It wasn't the best game in the world, but marked the end of an era as the last DreamWorks GameCube title.
Shrek's long-awaited return to console
Much like the movies (although Shrek Forever After is much better than Shrek the Third), Shrek video games dropped off a bit. We're not sure we'll ever get back to greats like Shrek 2 and its minigames, but like the movie series is poised for a comeback, it's about time the games came back too.
Aside from mobile games, the last Shrek video game was DreamWorks Super Star Kartz in 2011. There's a sense of justice that after 12 years, that green grouch is coming back for another racing title. Whether DreamWorks All-Star Kart Racing is the next big thing or another disaster MultiVersus, we can't wait to race as Shrek.
